A Beginner's Guide to Bathroom Renovations & Pro Tips for First-Time Remodelers

Many people think a bathroom renovation is a quick weekend project or that it’s as simple as swapping out fixtures, but in reality, it often involves plumbing, electrical work, and unexpected structural issues. These ideas are misleading because they underestimate the complexity, time, and budgeting required—so in my blog, I’ll walk you through what the process actually looks like, step by step.

Phase 1: Proactive Planning

The planning stage of a bathroom renovation is all about balancing function, style, and budget. While many projects keep the existing layout to save on plumbing and electrical costs, others involve relocating fixtures or upgrading systems to better suit my client's needs. I also often incorporate custom cabinetry and storage solutions to maximize space and give the room a more tailored, high-end feel.

Phase 2: Detailed Design

Before ordering a single item, it’s essential to finalize all design selections—tile, hardware, wood species, paint colors, lighting, and decor. This upfront planning ensures a cohesive, well-thought-out design that flows not only within the bathroom but also complements the overall aesthetic of your home. Having every element chosen in advance also helps avoid delays, backorders, and costly last-minute changes during the renovation.

Phase 3: Exceptional Execution

As your interior designer, I’ll personally source every material and finish—tile, fixtures, cabinetry, lighting, and more—ensuring each piece aligns with your vision and the overall design. I’ll collaborate closely with your general contractor, sharing detailed plans, elevations, and specifications to make sure everything is installed exactly as intended. Throughout the renovation, I’ll be on site to answer questions, troubleshoot in real time, and ensure your new bathroom comes together seamlessly and beautifully.

For the bathroom renovations I complete, the typical timeline includes about 4 weeks for design and planning, followed by 1–2 weeks for production and installation. A powder room renovation usually ranges from $8,000–$12,000 depending on the finishes selected; to start off on the right track, my best advice is to define your goals early, trust the design process, and be realistic about budget and timeline to avoid surprises down the line.
